i feel a sudden bloom of hope inside me
i love my dad so much he’s my best friend in the whole world and he’s so weird so i decided to compile a list of all the adorable stupid stuff he does
- plays a daily trivia game on his phone and if it’s asking about something he knows i have an interest in (psychology, fashion, pop culture, etc) he sends me a screenshot to get my help
- hates using straws and is very passionate about how disposable straws are ruining the ecosystem, he now carries a reusable straw with him at all times
- ADORES our cat (who’s name is buddy and he’s 15) and makes sure buddy gets exactly five treats every night AND takes him on walks around the neighborhood but only late at night so that most of the dogs won’t be out to bother him
- cannot drive a car without talking to someone, but really only ever calls three people, so every day on his commute to and from work he calls my mom first but if she’s busy he calls my grandpa but if he’s busy he calls me
- reads the comics from the paper every night before bed, while listening to his favorite jazz/easy listening radio station of course
- every saturday he sleeps in until at least 11, then he gets up and makes a smoothie that he drinks while making gluten free waffles, every. single. saturday.
- loves to fist bump and it confuses people 90% of the time bc who the hell fist bumps anymore but he still insists on fist bumping everyone
- his favorite song in the world is ‘thrift shop’ by macklemore and will get up and dance to it every time it comes on shuffle, he’s also requested it at every single wedding reception we’ve been to
- loves taking selfies and has been since before selfies were even a thing so he can ‘record his aging process’
- wears the same shorts he’s had since the 80s to wash his car, they have lobsters all over them and are way way too short than any 57 year old dad should ever wear
- likes to ‘stay connected with youth culture’ and gets mad at me when i dont have any new music/movies to show him when i visit
- told me not to do cocaine because when he did it ‘it was too much fun, something that good can be very dangerous, you need to be careful C’
- has two pairs of sweatpants one are his ‘comfy’ sweats that he wears all the time and the other are his ‘fancy’ sweats that he changes into from the ‘comfy’ sweats when he needs to leave the house, but he just changes back when he gets home
i honestly could make this list indefinitely long but yeah if youre ever sad just know my dad is out there being his weird ol’ self and would definitely encourage you to do the same
ive got some more lovely things to add to this list i hope it makes you smile
- took a selfie with me the last time he visited last week and has texted it to me now three times to make sure i have it because it’s a ‘great pic!’
- got his first laptop computer six months ago and doesn’t know how to screenshot so he’ll just take a picture of his screen with his phone
- writes down inspirational quotes he finds and sends me one every morning before he goes to work
- when i was in growing up, every morning he would come into my room to wake me up for school, kiss me on the head and say ‘i love you, you’re strong and powerful and beautiful, i’m proud of you’ every morning. without fail.
- cries during any movie where an animal/pet dies, especially if it’s a cat
- knows full well that he’s a skinny white boy with no ass and calls himself the ‘buttless wonder’
- my friend chris’s dad died two years ago so now during breaks when chris is in town, my dad calls him up and takes him on hikes and bike rides and local breweries (it’s a thing they’re both really into) just the two of them so he can make sure chris is still doin okay
- he’s a personal trainer and forwards me emails of workouts he thinks id like/actually do lol
i love my dad and my hope is that everyone can have a dad like mine, but if not, im sure my dad would love to adopt you
father’s day seems like a good time to update this post. my dad is literally one of the most wonderful people i know with such a genuine loving heart
- actually cried when i read him this list
- gives the very best all encompasing hugs and makes sure to take my glassess off before he gives me one so they don’t get smooshed into my face
- drinks water constantly which makes him have to pee constantly so basically if you ever don’t know where he is he’s probably in the bathroom
- never wears headphones in the gym because he always wants to be available to talk/help people (even when he’s not working)
- regularly goes bar hopping/clubbing with me and last time we went he got so drunk that he couldn’t make it up the stairs after we got home
- when he thinks he’s annoyed my mom in the family group chat he sends her a special text message to apologize and check in to see if she’s okay
- loves princess diaries 2 and keeps bugging me to watch it with him because he says it’s not as fun by himself
- vapes cbd with his tennis buddies after their weekend matches and has lit up with me multiple times
- really wants to grow his hair out and have a man-bun but he can’t because of his job and he literally will not stop complaining to me about it
- likes to think of himself as a crotchety old man bc he thinks it’s funny but actually has the temperament of a golden retriever puppy
there’s going to be more for this list as time goes on, I’m sure of it, but i hope my dad could bring a smile to your face <3
